A Q&A with May Deldari Of Maylyn & Co Vegan Sleepwear

Looking for a vegan silk alternative that feels just as soft, light, and sexy as the real thing? Good thinking! In the fashion industry, silkworms are usually raised and killed solely for silk production. Plus, they’ll eat copious amounts of mulberry leaves to produce their silk. One mulberry tree will typically produce enough for 100 silkworms. However, it takes 3,000 cocoons to produce just one yard of silk! That’s not to mention the harmful chemicals like bleach and dyes used to produce this fabric.

So, vegan silk can be a great eco-friendly, ethical alternative! This is especially true when it’s made with lotus stems, as is the incredible eco-friendly fabric used at Maylyn & Co. Produced in Iran, the plant fibers used for their Persian Lotus Silk are handpicked from sustainable family farms and processed with zero toxic chemicals or additional water and gas.

Why Do We Love Maylyn & Co Sleepwear?

Ethics

This brand is all about animal rights and the fair treatment of its workers. All pieces are 100% PETA-Approved Vegan, free from any animal derivatives or abuse. In addition, they ensure their working conditions follow International Labour Organization standards as well as their regularly monitored code of conduct. As a result, each of their employees works full-time, has flex working hours, lunch hours, and is treated with dignity and respect.

Sustainability

As a slow fashion brand, the team at Maylyn & Co is sure to make the most out of their fabric and keep their carbon emissions to a minimum. Not only do they use eco-friendly, long-lasting fabrics like Tencel MODAL, their signature Persian Lotus Silk, and recycled PET, they also choose ocean-freight delivery rather than airfreight, which, according to the brand, generates 47x more greenhouse gas emissions than their pick.

Something else you will love about their lotus silk is that the production of this plant helps clean the waters in which it grows, and protects fish and insects! So, not only does this fabric boast a lower carbon footprint and require less resources, its production actively benefits fragile ecosystems.

What about their dyes, you ask? They’ve opted for spin-dyeing, which results in 50% lower energy use, and a 60% lower carbon footprint than today’s most common method.

Health

Maylyn & Co’s fabrics are not only beneficial to our planet and the animals — they’re also made with non-toxic materials! Find their fabulous pieces beloWe recently had the opportunity to get in touch with the incredible CEO and founder of this fabulous company, May Deldari. We had a few more questions about the origins, quality, and production process of this fascinating textile. Check out her answers below!

OV: When did you first learn about lotus silk?

MD: It was back in 2019 on our trip back home when we travelled to North Of Persia for pleasure. We were visiting our friends in Mazandaran and they took us to this beautiful lotus farm.

OV: Could you walk us through the steps of the lotus silk production process?

MD: The stems of the lotus plants are collected, snapped, and twisted to expose their fibers. After this, filaments of fiber are hung to dry and then rolled into threads. Fabrics are woven in the traditional looms, then dyed with natural dyes.

OV: You mentioned in your About page that you used to experience irritation when wearing certain garments. Would you consider lotus silk fabric a gentler alternative for those suffering from skin sensitivities?

MD: Yes, it is definitely a great alternative for people with skin sensitivity.

OV: How would you compare the quality of lotus silk to that of conventional silk?

MD: The texture is similar to silk, however, it’s much more durable, softer and comfier than regular silk.
